We use “contractor” as a shorthand for independent contractors, freelance operators, self-employed people and small business owners — anyone who invoices for their work rather than drawing a salary.
Which should I choose?
- Choose employee if someone pays you a salary — including when an agency, consultancy or employer of record employs you and places you with a client.
- Choose contractor if you invoice for your work, even if you have just one client on a long engagement and the work looks much like a job.
We’re going to show you questions for both employees and contractors.
Some of the questions may have different answers depending on whether you’re considering them as an employee or as a contractor. In these cases, you can:
- answer as whichever you spent the most time working as (in the past year); or
- answer as whichever you earned the most income from; or
- answer as whichever is the most regular mode of working for you.
As an employee:

As an employee:

As a contractor:
Please fill out the contract questions as though you were still working with your last client. If that was much more than a year ago, go back to the first question and choose employee instead — figures that old would skew the results, and your employment is current.
As an employee and a contractor:
Please fill out the survey as though you were still in your last job and working with your last client. If one of them was much more than a year ago but the other is recent, go back to the first question and choose just the recent one. If both were that long ago, please skip this year’s survey — figures that old would skew the results. We’d love to see you next year.
